The Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) scientists in China have created the world’s first AI child named Tong Tong, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. According to the researchers, Tong Tong is capable of behaving like a child through the use of artificial intelligence technology. The AI child was unveiled at a recent General Artificial Intelligence Technology Exhibition in Beijing.

Tong Tong’s body is created using AI software, making it visible only on screens. As a result, physical interaction with the child is not possible. The virtual intelligence of Tong Tong is designed to mimic the behaviour typically seen in children aged three to four years old.

During a demonstration at the exhibition, Tong Tong showcased its ability to learn different subjects on its own. The AI child even expressed emotions, including anger, in response to various situations. Attendees at the exhibition were astonished as Tong Tong independently displayed various gestures and entertained them with playful actions.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, when attendees engaged in conversation with Tong Tong during the exhibition, they suggested different tasks for the AI child to perform. Tong Tong responded by creating imaginative images, such as assembling virtual puzzles and attempting to wipe away virtual spilt milk. Typically, AI chatbots require detailed instructions to perform tasks, but Tong Tong demonstrated a unique ability to autonomously engage in various activities.

This groundbreaking creation has the potential to bring significant changes to the field of technology by showcasing the capabilities of AI in creating lifelike virtual entities. Scientists at the institute continue to explore the possibilities and applications of AI technology, and Tong Tong stands as a remarkable achievement in the world of artificial intelligence.
